Walmart Import Distribution Center
Walmart broke ground on its import distribution center in James City in 2000. The initial $50 million investment produced a 1-million-square-foot building on the 200-acre site.
That site has grown by an additional 1 million square feet and today employs approximately 400. The center acts as a holding place for merchandise bought overseas before it ships to regional distribution centers and this activity has added 20,000 containers each year through the Port of Virginia.
“We have found James City County to be a great place to do business for a number of reasons including its talented, dedicated and skilled workforce. Walmart places a high value on our employees at all levels within our organization and the existence of a strong labor pool greatly benefits our corporation and the community as a whole.”
